Lax Ladies Get the Last Laugh

Lax Ladies Get the Last Laugh

It was an emotional, yet dominating performance by Northside’s women’s lacrosse team on their Senior Night. The Mustangs took on Taft on May 1, 2018. Because this was one of the first warm days of the year, the game drew a large crowd and those in attendance would be treated to a great match.

Northside had the Eagles up against the ropes from the start. Although Taft is usually a formidable opponent, they simply did not have enough to hold off the Mustang’s offensive power. The majority of Northside’s starters were seniors (as custom on Senior Day). Unfortunately, seniors Nina Kritikos, Adv. 801, and Jackie Martinez, Adv. 804, were unable to play in their final home game because both suffered gruesome knee injuries half way through the season. When talking to Kritikos about her injury, she said, “Yeah it’s unfortunate, but I’m still going to be here for all my girls. I love this team, I just wish I had better knees.” Despite their injuries, Kritikos and Martinez’s abundant lacrosse knowledge and infectious positive attitude has helped Northside reach victory this season.

The skillful group of seniors played well in the first half. Anastasia Luridas, Adv. 810, made some great defensive plays to keep Taft away from the goal. Meanwhile, the offense, lead by Maeve Masterson, Adv. 804, Lillian Root, Adv. 002, and Nicole Heflin, Adv. 803, punished Taft’s defense with speed and good ball movement.

The Mustangs decided not to utilize lax star Audrey McManus, Adv. 900, until the second half in order to give seniors more playing time. Once McManus came into the game, her lacrosse IQ and raw skill opened up more passing lanes for the team. With everyone on the team playing their best, the Mustangs were able to come away with a 12-2 victory.

This win was special because it was the last regular season game at Northside for seniors Masterson, Kritikos, Heflin, Martinez, Luridas, Ruby Massey, Adv. 805, Paulina Motoszko, Adv. 805, and Neenah Vittum, Adv. 805. These varsity veterans have been playing lacrosse since freshman year and have gotten better each year.

Once the game was over, there was a whirlwind of emotions, quite a few bittersweet smiles, and a lot more tears.
