Teeing Off a New Season of Men’s Golf

Teeing Off a New Season of Men’s Golf

by Caroline Merck

As fall sports begin to pick up, the men’s golf team is beginning a new season. Veterans Daniel O’Connor, Adv. 901, and Brendan Devine, Adv. 900, are looking to run the table and potentially win the city championship. This year, Devine has been showing lots of potential and already performing beyond expectations. Sergio Rodriguez, Adv. 905, said “the team is looking great and Coach Dave Kresl is showing us a lot.” Rodriguez also noted Devine’s improvement and believes that the team will only get better as the season progresses.

The Mustang golfers are in the CPS Red Division Conference. They practice at the Billy Caldwell golf course in the Edgebrook area, one of the best nine-hole park district courses in the city. This year, the team has really been enjoying the fall weather, as it has been more dry and sunnier than past years, perfect golfing weather.

The team members are competing against each other, but also competing against other schools with combined scores. This makes golf unique because it can be considered an individual sport, as well as a team competition. This causes some competition between the team members, but the team still strives to reach a bigger goal of self improvement. “Everyone is just trying to get better and it’s great that we get to have some fun as we play too,” said O’Connor. “That’s what’s great about playing a Northside sport,” he adds, “Everyone is involved and can be in more extracurricular activities.” Rodriguez talks about the leadership roles on the team. “The core stars are myself, Brendan Devine, Danny O’Connor, and Liam O’Connor (Adv. 004).” The four have more experience than most, and look to use this to help other members get better.

Men’s golf is a great way to experience a sport that is not as demanding as most of the other Northside sports. Golf has a no-cut policy and they are very welcoming at the beginning of each season. This year, the team is looking out for tough competition such as Whitney Young. The Mustangs have already had a close preseason match against Young, but have their eyes set on a larger prize. “We’re staying hopeful and looking at the possibility to claim multiple titles by the end of the season,” says Rodriguez.

Overall, men’s golf is looking stronger than in years past. The team has a lot of chemistry and the members enjoy the social aspect of the game. They look forward to the rest of the season and hope to end with a title.
