Meet One of the Most Powerful Superheroes in the World: Captain Marvel
By Alina Yamin
“Captain Marvel” is the twenty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is the first one with a female superhero as the main character. Additionally, in the most recent Marvel movie, “Avengers: Infinity War,” the audience was told it would be Captain Marvel who would save all the dead heroes who were “killed” by Thanos. For this reason, the movie was highly anticipated as fans could not wait to learn the story of the next big hero.
“Captain Marvel” is the story of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), more commonly referred to as Vers. On Earth, Vers is a U.S. Air Officer. For reasons initially unknown to the reader, she gains superpowers, loses her memory, and eventually joins Starforce, an elite military force of the alien Kree empire. Vers’ mentor, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), warns her to control her powers and to keep her emotions under control.
While working as an undercover spy, Vers is captured by alien shapeshifters called Skrulls with whom the Kree empire is at war with. Her memory is examined by the Skrulls, but Vers is able to escape. She ends up on Earth and encounters agents, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). The agents attempt to arrest Vers but are interrupted by a Skrull attack. Vers and the agents turn their attention to the Skrulls and begin to chase them.
During the chase, Vers recovers a crystal containing all of her memories. Through the crystal, Vers learns that she was a pilot who “died” six years earlier while testing a light-speed engine. She was working for a scientist named Wendy Lawson (Annette Bening), who Vers realizes that it is the woman from her recurring nightmares. Vers also eventually remembers that Yon-Rogg killed Lawson and that Lawson warned her that the engine’s energy-core must be destroyed in order to be kept from the wrong hands. Vers shot the engine but absorbed all of its energy, which is how she gained her super powers. Yon-Rogg then brought Vers to his planet to use her for his own purposes. Vers also learns that the Skrulls are refugees and that Lawson’s engine was supposed to help them escape Kree.
Vers, along with Fury, friends of Vers from her past life, and several Skrulls, find the source of the energy-core’s power, However, Vers is tracked down and captured by Yon-Rogg’s Starforce. Vers finally is able to obtain her full power, and she escapes. Vers defeats Yon-Rogg, agrees to help the Skrulls find a new home, and gives Fury a pager to contact her in case of emergency.
Overall, “Captain Marvel” is an exciting movie that is empowering for women. It feels familiar for Marvel fans, but is also fresh and unique. The graphics are incredible, and there is a great combination of humor and action. It sets up the next movie perfectly, and fans everywhere cannot wait to see “Avengers: Endgame” on April 26.
