“Isn’t It Romantic:” A Not So Classic Romantic Comedy

“Isn’t It Romantic:” A Not So Classic Romantic Comedy

By Klaudia Jablonska

“Isn’t It Romantic” takes the audience through New York architect Natalie’s journey, starred by Rebel Wilson, of self discovery and the importance of loving one’s self before loving others.

The movie begins with a typical day in the office for Natalie. The audience is quick to learn about Natalie’s distaste for romantic comedies, which stems from her belief that that girls like her do not get those happy endings in romantic comedies. However, Natalie does not realize that her good friend Josh (Adam Devine) has fallen for her. On her way home that day, Natalie gets mugged in the subway and hits her head badly on a post. Natalie then wakes up in a hospital with a concussion, but she realizes that something is different.

Suddenly, Natalie finds herself the main character of what appears to be your typical, cliche romantic comedy. All of a sudden, Natalie has become the girl that every guy in every romantic comedy swoons over. When she leaves the hospital she almost gets hit by a limousine belonging to her firm’s client, Blake (Liam Hemsworth), and he is immediately smitten by her “beguiling” personality. Josh, who had no prior girlfriends, is now in a relationship with a swimsuit model named Isabella (Priyanka Chopra) after saving her from choking.

Natalie eventually realizes that the only way to break free from this romantic comedy that has become her life is to get someone to fall in love with her so that she can have her happy ending. Natalie finds the perfect man to fall for her when she coincidentally meets Blake again. Through the duration of the movie, “Isn’t It Romantic” continues to mock romantic comedies in a satirical way. The audience sees two women in the workplace as rivals pitted against one another, Natalie eventually breaks into song with a flash mob joining her in a dance, has a sing/dance off for Josh against Isabella, and then eventually runs in slow motion to stop Josh’s wedding after realizing she loves him.

At first, Natalie assumed that all she needed to do to was to have someone fall in love with her. Natalie soon realized that even though she liked Blake, she loved Josh. Despite realizing her feelings for Josh, Natalie had forgotten to think about herself. She came to the epiphany that first she must love herself before she can find true love.

In this fantastical romance film that mocks all the tropes of a romantic comedy film, “Isn’t It Romantic” teaches its audience a valuable lesson in today’s society -- that true love can be acquired by anyone; it does not only apply to a specific mold of a person.
