Eating in The Library is Allowed -- But Now...
By Sasha Aristizabal
“The sign says no eating in the library. That’s why I don’t eat, I munch.” Osazee Osaghae, Adv. 904, is well known for “munching” in the library without any restraint. In general food that has been ordered is eaten discretely or out in the open. Even milkshakes and smoothies are not allowed, but many students seem to forget and break this rule. Water is the only drink that is allowed to be out in the open without getting a warning or being kicked out.
After years of begging Ms. McCreedy and school administrators, students are now allowed to eat in the library. After seeing the multitude of students sneak around and “discreetly” eat a delicious snack or lunch, the administrators gave students the go-ahead to bring their food out of hiding. Taking their decision a step further, administration has announced that food will occasionally be provided to students -- including popular snacks such as chips and cookies -- that will be served during after school until resources run out.
Students are rejoicing at this opportunity to finally eat in peace in their favorite place to relax. The decades-long pain of being kicked out of the library for secretly eating is no more. Edina Hadzic, Adv. 905, is also well known for eating in the library; when she heard the news, she said, “Thank goodness. I’m so glad Mr. Michael Keane won’t have to always come up to me and nag me about the rules and how we aren’t supposed to be eating”.
However, with new opportunities come with new responsibilities. Students will now have to help clean up the library if they eat food. Tasks such as vacuuming and cleaning the tables will be mandatory for anyone who brings food into the library. With students now eating, administration believes it will be too much work for the janitors and believe that students should start taking responsibility for their own messes. Students will not be allowed to leave unless they do their part and clean up any mess they may have made. Even if a student does not bring in food or eat, but the area they are sitting at has food, they will be required to help clean up.
The library will also be open past 5:00 p.m. for students left cleaning up. Both carpeted floors of the library will need to be vacuumed thoroughly every day and every surface will need to be wiped down. Administration is well aware that their paid custodial workers could clean the library; however, after getting so many requests for students to be able to eat in there, the officials decided that students are capable of cleaning the library themselves.
Enjoy eating as much as you want whenever you want in the library! Just be ready to stay late and help clean up.
