Danny O'Connor Wows Us Again, But Are We Surprised?
By Maya Gorman
This week I had the absolute honor and privilege of talking to the man, the myth, the legend Daniel O’Connor Jr, Adv. 901, captain of all the sports teams at Northside, including the women's teams. One wonders how he is able to handle carrying all the Northside teams to state championships. “Hard work and dedication,” O’Connor, said. “I think the teams we have here at Northside are exceptional, and as we are a school dedicated to athletics, we have a group of amazing athletes here. Ibrahim Adebayo, Adv. 907, Sergio Rodriguez, Adv. 905, and Brendan Devine, Adv. 900, to name a few.”
I asked O’Connor what his day-to-day life was like at Northside, and was enthralled by his responses. “First, I get up and put on the same pair of khakis I wear every day and maybe a Cubs or Northwestern shirt. Oh, did I mention that I got into Northwestern?”
“Oh my gosh,” I responded ,”Congratulations! You and your family must be so proud.”
“I try to wear as much Northwestern gear as possible to remind everyone of my achievement,” said O’Connor. “Other than that, my outfits are pretty boring considering I don’t put much time into what I wear because I’d rather spend time telling everyone about how we crushed Lane in that phenomenal game. Almost 30 people came from Northside to watch us play and they were all so excited when they got to watch their school dominate.”
When he gets to Northside, he parks his white Audi next to his brother’s red Jaguar, on the street because “the parking permit is just too expensive.” After grabbing his small Cubs lunch box because “my goal is to be as skinny as possible,” he walks into school and sits down in class. After school, he excitedly goes to baseball practice where he plays the amazing position of left field.
