Offset is a “Father of Four”
By Yonatan Derbew
“Father of Four” is Offset’s first studio album and was released on Feb. 22, 2019. On his intro track “Father of Four,” Offset raps about the side of him that the public does not see: his role as a father and the man he is to his family. In this track, he mainly talks about his life and the children he has fathered. Offset repeats the lines, “I was seventeen years old when I had you (When I had you) / Tryna find my soul when I had you (When I had you).” This track is meant to show the personal issues that Offset has, mainly his four children and what they mean to him. The intro track does an effective job of previewing the rest of the album and Offset’s purpose in the album.
The main purpose of the album is to show Offset as an ordinary father who just wants to provide for his children and family. However, Offset tends to overlook this message in some of his tracks. One such song is “Legacy” which features Travis Scott and 21 Savage. This track is structured well with all three artists delivering bars in successive order. The lines in the track are delivered s with complete certainty and conviction. This is a bigger feature of the track mainly because of the song’s topic: gang violence. Savage has been known to threaten other rappers and diss on tracks like this one. Because the main subject of this track is gang violence, as well as the fact that this song is called “Legacy,” the artists could be implying that their legacies are in the streets with their respective gangs. This message is different from the one in his intro and leaves people to wonder Offset’s true meaning behind this album.
“Father of Four”is an album that is meant to show off a side of Offset that the media does not portray. Still, Offset raps about various topics that are loosely related to each other. I only found two songs on the album well-produced, namely “Father of Four” and “Legacy.” In these songs Offset does a good job of switching up his flow and style so that the product is both unique and polished. Offset’s first track does a good job of portraying the fatherly side of him but he falters throughout the rest of the album. Although Offset made this album to talk about his family, he does so very little and slips into his regular rapping style about his fame and wealth. Offset’s album may be called “Father of Four,” but it does not focus much on Offset himself as a father figure.
