It’s Always “Hoodie SZN”

It’s Always “Hoodie SZN”

By Yonatan Derbew

“Hoodie SZN” is Boogie wit da Hoodie’s second studio album and was released on Dec. 21, 2018. The album itself is Boogie’s way of expressing his feelings on women and fame. On his intro track “Voices in my Head,” Boogie raps about everything that he has had to deal with throughout his rise to fame. He mentions the one of his friend’s arrest, his thoughts on his previous album, his belief that women are into him in an attempt to gain clout, and even goes as far to compare himself to Michael Jackson. In tracks such as “Beasty,” “Skeezers,” and “Just Like Me,” which features Young Thug, Boogie uses his voice as an instrument by hitting different vocal ranges as he raps and sings through the melodies, something that many attribute to Young Thug. This adds depth to a track that would otherwise sounded very monotone.

Boogie seems to have difficulty understanding his feelings towards women. Oftentimes in songs, he makes bipolar-like comments on women, rapping about how he loves them and how at the same time he believes that they are just with him for the money. In “4 Minute Combo” he raps in the beginning of the track that he has “Bonnie and Clyde issues” with a woman, only to later state that he “ [doesn’t] love (expletive)… if I tell you I love you, just dismiss it.” While the song remains entertaining, it does not change the fact that Boogie does not have consistent views about the women in his life.

Features are also a crucial part of the album. “Startender” and “Swervin” are both supported by the features. “Startender” features Offset and Tyga, two rappers known for bringing heat when it comes to features. They do not disappoint fans’ high expectations, however, with fast-paced verses about their success and lifestyle. “Swervin” features 6ix9ine, who raps in a toned-down version of his notorious style of screaming, ultimately adding an almost romantic verse to the song. Queen Naija’s feature in “Come Closer,” adds a different view to the song in which Boogie is asking for someone to come back into his life. She makes it clear that Boogie treated her poorly and does not deserve her back. Rapped over a simple guitar beat, the back and forth of the two rappers is truly a modern love song.

“Hoodie SZN”is an album that capitalizes on Boogie’s vocals and the beats he produces. The other artists and their quick pace help to complement Boogie’s voice and are what makes this album a banger. Although Boogie is not consistent with his views in this album, it does not change the fact that the album is well-produced.
