Panthers Become Prey
by Guy Lahoua
In the back lot behind Northside, a classic matchup between the Mustangs and the Von Steuben Panthers took place once again. The first time these two foes faced off this season, the Panthers came out victorious. This time, the Mustangs were more fired up, as it was their Senior Day.
The stands were packed. After the speeches were given and presents were handed out, the seniors took the field. The starters were a hodgepodge of seniors that had never played together before. The game began with a kick from Bella Greco, Adv. 800. Although Greco had a concussion, the coaches allowed her to start, but not actually play in the game, because it was her Senior Day.
From the start, it was apparent that this was a different Mustangs team. They were slow to get to the ball, there were miscommunications, and easy opportunities were missed. The Mustangs were able to stay in the game because of their efforts of the defence. Although they were members of the junior varsity team, Claire Madsen, Adv. 800, and Melina Truong, Adv. 801, kept the Panthers at bay for as long as they could. However, the Panthers finally broke through and jumped to a 1-0 lead. This goal seemed to wake the Mustangs up. The team slowly began to string together one good pass after another. They began to push the Panthers back and soon fired an onslaught of shots that barely missed the back of the net. Finally, the floodgates were opened with a fantastic goal from captain Rebecca Skipper, Adv. 806. The Mustangs did not stop there, as Skipper scored two more goals and Megan Sobolewski, Adv. 809 scored the fourth. The Mustangs completely overwhelmed the panthers and sent them running with their tails between their legs. The game ended in a 6-2 victory for the Mustangs.
When asked about how she felt throughout the entire experience, Bailey Duboe, Adv. 807, said, “Our teammates did really cute things for us to make us feel special. We were given posters and trophies and candy, that almost made spelling my name wrong okay.” This senior day was full of ups and downs, but it definitely ended on a high note.
