Jeff Finelli Returns After Deal With Mest
by Kathryn Merck
Many Northside students often recall Mr. Jeff Finelli, former assistant principal, in a fond way. His energetic attitude and ability to take control over a room, and in some instances, a pep-rally audience, has been missed on multiple occasions throughout the 2017-2018 school year. This International Night, many students missed Finelli’s live tweet tradition during each of the performances. However, Northside students will be thrilled to learn that Mr. Finelli has decided to return to Northside for the 2018-2019 school year.
In a tweet on Feb. 29, 2018, Mr. Finelli stated, “I am so excited to announce that I will be returning to Northside College Prep as the assistant principal next year.” The tweet received a total of 15 likes and five retweets, a record high for Finelli. This tweet was his first post since Cubby Walk of 2017.
Finelli left Northside to become the principal at Edison Park Elementary School. The job seemed perfect for Finelli, which made leaving Northside a difficult, but important decision. However, Northside knew that they could find a way to get him back as assistant principal.
After months of consideration, Northside’s Principal Kelly Mest decided to take action. She knew it would take thousands of dollars of additional pay to persuade him to come back. To gather additional funds for Finelli’s salary, Mest decided to eliminate Northside’s 1-to-1 Chromebook program for the 2018-2019 school year. Students will have to find their own computers to use throughout the school year. Mest hopes parents and students understand that removing the program is extremely beneficial because it ensures Finelli’s return.
When asked to comment on this drastic change, Finelli told the HoofBeat, “It is very heartwarming to know that the Northside community and Ms. Mest care so much about my return. However, I feel as though my Northside comeback is worth much more than just removing the 1-to-1 Chromebook program. Before leaving Northside, I noticed the library was becoming less and less popular among Northside students, so perhaps removing or selling the library off to out-of-school sources could also help fund my return.”
As for the rest of this year, Finelli will remain at Edison Park Elementary School. However, Finelli informed the HoofBeat that his favorite Northside event is closely approaching: Cubby Walk. Returning students may remember Finelli’s duet with Mr. Timothy Jung, English department. Finelli stated that he might return to the Cubby Walk Pep Rally to have an encore performance with Mr. Jung prior to his official return to Northside. He told the HoofBeat, “This should be our best performance yet.”
