Northside’s Defense Dominates Senn
By Yonatan Derbew
Northside’s women’s varsity basketball team displayed their prowess on Nov. 29 when they played against the Senn Bulldogs. The team started the game with a record of 2-3 looking to reach .500. The crowd was filled with both Northside and Senn supporters waiting for the game to begin.
The Mustangs started the game off strong and played well defensively. They hounded the Bulldogs for the ball and had a couple of steals that led to fastbreak points. They continued their efforts throughout the entire first quarter; the score at the end was 18-2. As the second quarter began, the Mustangs were able to find a variety of ways to score. Alina Yamin, Adv. 902, scored a three pointer while also dishing the ball out to her teammates who scored their own three pointers. Northside also drove to the basket, which forced Senn to foul the players. The team took advantage of this at the free throw line and continued to increase the score. Northside was able to close the first half in the lead with a score of 39-15.
After the halftime, the Mustangs got back on the court determined to finish what they had started. They capitalized on defensive plays, scoring several fastbreak points to widen the gap even further. The Mustangs continued to score and refused to give the Bulldogs any time to breathe or even get back in the game. The Bulldogs were able to make a couple of baskets but it was no match for Northside’s scoring barrage. As a result of NCP’s scoring run and defensive plays, the Mustangs ended the third quarter 58-23.
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs heated up the court while Senn tried to keep up. Senn briefly went on a run and tried to get back in the game, but it was in vain. Northside’s defensive prowess capped Senn’s chance of a victory. Near the end of the game, the crowd was chanting for three more points in order to seal a 40 point victory. Northside dribbled down the court with under a minute remaining and did some quick passes to find Rachel Vu, Adv. 010, on the left arc. Vu shot the three and granted the crowd’s wishes.
The Mustangs won the game, defeating the Bulldogs 70-30. The Northside crowd left satisfied after Northside’s victory. Yamin said, “This game was a really great win for us. We came out strong and our defense shut them down. We were able to move the ball around and give everyone a chance to shoot the ball. Games like these allow everyone on the team to not only play, but also score. Whenever these games happen everybody is pleased with the outcome but also contributed to the win. I feel that if we play like we did today, we can definitely win our conference.” The team will have an upcoming Christmas tournament as well as a game against Payton for the Principal’s Cup. This game proved that Northside’s women’s team is a force to be reckoned with.
