Meet Your New Favorite Popstar: Dua Lipa

Meet Your New Favorite Popstar: Dua Lipa

by Alexis Martinez

Like many famous artists today, Dua Lipa’s musical career began on YouTube, starting in 2015. According to Spotify, the English singer/songwriter and model is now the most streamed woman of the year. At first, she made a name for herself by covering popular songs, but the Warner Music Group saw a spark in her and chose to sign her. This spark soon became a lightning bolt when she released her first single, “New Love.”

Her album, “Dua Lipa,” was a hit and received a huge amount of positive feedback from music critics all over the world. DIY writer Alim Kheraj remarked that "across the album's 12 tracks, there are bangers aplenty." The album has six singles in the UK’s top 40. So far, "Be the One,” "Hotter than Hell,” “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” and "New Rules,”  have been the most popular songs off of the album. Although the presence of Miguel and Chris Martin does give her clout, her smokey, mid-range vocals would have still put her album up in the charts.

Lipa describes her music as “dark pop,” as her lyrical themes revolve around her personal views of love, rising above, sex, and self-empowerment. Others see her music as a sort of EDM and tropical house mix; it is difficult to name her sound since it is different from what people are used to and not chasing a trend. In an interview conducted by Amy Davidson, Lipa spoke of her debut album. "I want people to see a piece of me. I want people to have an insight into everything that's happened over the last few years while I was writing the album and actually really get to know me. It's been good because when I released 'New Love' and 'Be The One', I had people say, 'That really relates to me.'” I want people to have that feeling and I want people to know that they're not alone in all this and that we all go through the same (explicit deleted). That's the main goal. For this album I want to be as truthful as possible, then all the club (explicit deleted) can come later."

Young girls find themselves trying to live up to Lipa’s rules from her song “New Rules,” which focuses on getting over a significant other. Many have even found themselves looking at this beautiful, strong, and blunt artist as a role model. Lipa has made a vow to educate the next generation by using her platform to preach what it is to be a feminist and to respect both men and women.
