Sergio’s Taqueria and Pizza Makes a Comeback

Sergio’s Taqueria and Pizza Makes a Comeback

by Kimberly Grabiec

Hundreds of Northside students were devastated by news that the restaurant Sergio’s was closed during the first few weeks of school. The student body was utterly confused and felt blindsided as there was no explanation as to why it had been closed. When calling to order for delivery, Stefania Betti, Adv. 902, says, “The phone would make a loud beeping and screeching noise in my ear, and no one from Sergio’s would pick up.” This popular local dining spot has changed the lives of many students, including Inyoung Nah, Adv. 904, who says, “Sergio’s is the reason I started liking pizza.” Along with pizza, Sergio’s menu includes a variety of dishes including tacos and burritos that many would describe as comfort food. On the contrary, the temporary closing of Sergio’s can be described as rather discomforting.

Since food from Sergio’s is such an important aspect of the Northside community, the students have come up with many theories as to why Sergio’s closed. Abbie Smith, Adv. 902, says, “I think someone at Sergio’s got food poisoning so they had to shut it down.” Another hypothesis was made by Christina Yoon, Adv. 903,  who said, “Sergio’s ran out of money and had to close the place down.” All of the rumors that circulated in the hallways and through the atria made the mystery of the closing all the more confusing and heartbreaking.

Luckily, avid Sergio’s customer Zainab Umardeen, Adv. 909, discovered the truth. Recalling from a previous conversation with Sergio’s owner, she says, “The owner went through surgery on her back.” She further explained that due to the surgery, she could not come to work for a few months, which included the beginning of the school year. Where could students flock to after school to get authentic burritos and pizza all in the same place? Looking at other options, none comes close to the iconic Sergio’s. The complementary chips and the welcoming atmosphere paired with a sweet horchata can be found nowhere else within a five block radius of Northside.

Sergio’s menu is especially unique due to its magical blend of arguably the two best foods in the world, Mexican and Italian. Never was there a time when a Northsider would go to Sergio’s and not find something that didn’t satisfy their afterschool cravings. Whether it be a classic cheesy slice of pizza, or a huge steak burrito, Sergio’s is always there to provide cheap, quality food every time. Not only is the food truly remarkable, but the restaurant feels like a family, and every Northside student was an extension of it.

A follow-up with the owner of the restaurant reassured the Northside community that the surgery was successful and that Sergio’s is back in business. The doors are wide open and Northsiders can once again return to the iconic restaurant after school is over.
