Meet Ms. Qazi!
by Agustin Fuentes
She took advanced classes all of high school. She took all AP classes her senior year. She was heavily tracked for a science career since middle school. Although this description may sound like a typical Northside student, a strong work ethic is prevalent in the staff as well. With the departure of Mrs. Volesky, the Science department was left with an open position and Ms. Qazi was the perfect match for a school like Northside.
Coming off a year of student teaching at Lindbloom after completing her Masters in Science Education, Ms. Qazi has taken no break. After one short year of student teaching, she made a lasting impression on the staff and students at Lindbloom. Ms. Qazi emphasized that her transition to Northside was very smooth for many reasons, partially because it was similar to her own high school experience. In 2010, Ms. Qazi graduated from Wheeling High School. Wheeling is a phenomenal public school, as it is the only one in the nation with a nanotechnology lab. It is not surprising, then, that most of the students are interested in a career in STEM. After her time at Wheeling High School, she went straight into her undergrad studies in biological sciences and onto her graduate studies in science education.
When asked about how her high school experience helped her transition, Ms. Qazi said: “I never took a regular class which is why I feel like I relate to all the students at Northside. I didn’t even have time to take an art class because of all the APs, and I love art!” She emphasized how important art is to her teaching. In class, she welcomes students to include art into their learning and provide answers in different, creative ways.
The newest addition to the science department may be the closest thing to a Northside student the staff has ever had. Ms. Qazi was in the shoes of her students only eight short years ago and she can relate to the pressures of a huge workload. With this empathy and her love for the sciences, Ms. Qazi is sure to be a great fit for the school and is looking forward to a fantastic school year.
