Homecoming 2023-2024

Girls Volleyball and Barbenheimer For the Win

After a week of twins, Barbie pink takeover, color wars, and a day of fancy formal wear, Northside served spirit at the Homecoming Volleyball game!

Homecoming Week: Spirit

Planned by the Student Council and Northside’s Pep Club, the Spirit Days were a huge success. Prior to the game, the spirit was already building high within the walls of Northside. Spirit Days, as well as the pep rally, made for a very lively environment.

Cooper Jurgeleit (Adv. 607) described the week as “phenomenal,” explaining that “the school spirit has been everywhere.” One highlight was the massive and wonderfully decorated Homecoming week banner in the main stairwell.

Students started the week off strong by twinning with their friends and then going all pink or all old-fashioned for a play on the Barbenheimer trend. By the middle of the week, spirit was at an all-time high when each section of the gym was a different color. Coordinating with their grades for the action-packed Pep Rally, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors wore white, black, gray, and maroon, respectively.

Homecoming Week: Volleyball Game

Northside’s Girls Varsity Volleyball team did it once again. Ranked 5th in their division and consistently bringing home wins, it is no surprise that these athletes have stolen the attention of the Northside community! The 2023 Homecoming Game only reinforced the team’s confidence and dynamite energy after two strong sets against Senn to win the game.

The building was buzzing with excitement for the big game on the fourth day of Spirit Week. Students showed up and showed out that Thursday afternoon. The bleachers were so filled that fans were spilling off the bleachers onto the stairs! The candy toss-outs for the crowd, amusing skits from the Boys’ Varsity Volleyball team on the sidelines, and Marty the Mustang hyping up the student section all contributed to a game that people couldn’t stop talking about. Caroline Wilson (Adv 409) shared that she “had never seen Northside show up like that before.”

After many serves, bumps, sets, and spikes, the girls won the first set against Senn with a score of 25 to 15. The second set, which was after a short break for the girls, was even more exciting after scoring 25 to 7. Coach Nicole Flores (Math Department) highlighted how “outside hitter Sofia Ruiz (Adv. 409) ended game two with a handful of serves and aces.” The crowd went wild with each point-earning serve Sofia made.

Support was radiating from the stands, with the shouts of victory leading the way to the next day’s exciting dance. The energy leading into Homecoming wasn’t just contained to the crowds. When asked about the dance, Maia Khetani (Adv. 603), the other captain of the Varsity team, shared, “I feel hyped, I feel ready, I feel ready to get on the dance floor, let’s go!”

The girls’ varsity volleyball team truly put on a Hollywood-worthy show, and their growth over the season was the highlight of it all!
