Lil Uzi Vert Does it Again

On August 25, Philadelphia rapper Lil Uzi Vert released his fourth studio album, titled “Luv is Rage 2.” Lil Uzi is one of the most popular rappers in the world today. He is completely dominating the rap/trap music scene and has an endless number of fans who were anticipating this album, because, to them, his music is ear candy.
It is a different Lil Uzi than most people are used to, but it is a refreshing change. During the first few listen throughs of the album, some Lil Uzi fans did not appreciate the music because it was not what they were expecting. After a couple more listens, though, fans began to see the genius of Lil Uzi. The album as a whole has a very psychedelic and ominous vibe, and it reminds a listener a lot of the the album’s lead single, “XO TOUR Lif3,” one of the most popular songs in the country. At the same time, its use of different trap beats creates an amazing auditory landscape that makes listeners feel like they are in a different world. The beats that Lil Uzi used in this album are very similar to ones that Kanye West has used in the past. West is one of Lil Uzi’s role models.
“Luv is Rage 2” opens up with “444 + 222,” which has the rapid-fire flow he is known for. “444 + 222” is a great introduction to the album because it gets the listener excited and hyped for the rest of the album. Lyrics are something that Lil Uzi is known to struggle with, and that does not change here, as the lyrics in this album were mediocre. The highlights of the album are the two songs “Neon Guts” and “Unfazed.” Pharrell Williams did a fantastic job on “Neon Guts” sticking to the overall sound of the album as Williams and Lil Uzi trade bars on a very carefree beat. The hook on this song is one of the most catchy and addicting on the whole album. The Weeknd does his thing on “Unfazed,” with high pitch vocals on the hook that really mesmerize the listener. Lil Uzi even adapted The Weeknd’s style on the song, and the both of them worked together very well.
Uzi explores dark themes on tracks such as “XO TOUR Lif3,” “The Way Life Goes,¨ and “Feelings Mutual.” Listening to those songs, it is clear that the depressing material came from somewhere real. A listener can feel the emotion in Lil Uzi’s voice as he raps about the better things in life and that everyone should move on. He even talks about his mother in the song “Dark Queen,” in a way that is very inspirational.
Lil Uzi ends the album with his hit single “XO TOUR Lif3.” This is a song that most artists would take years to write. It is the type of song where listeners get goosebumps every time the chorus of “I don't really care if you cry” and “All my friends are dead. Push me to the edge,” comes on.
“Luv Is Rage 2¨ is ultimately a record about keeping it together when your wits and resolve have been tested and depleted. Lil Uzi Vert is one of rap’s biggest stars and, after this album, it seems like he’s going to be on top for a very long time.
